It is not the corporate, it‘s you…
When I was stuck in the rut, I felt resentful about my job, trapped in a “heartless” corporate environment, upset about choosing career for wrong reasons (I wonder if you could see it on this corporate profile shot from 2014? I think I did a pretty good job at making a happy face).
The stress from my job affected my personal life. The knot seemed tight. I could not decide whether I should start with resolving my personal life or the work situation first. The result - staying stuck in an unsatisfying status quo for years.
Do you ever feel this way?
It is true! Your job will take as much as you give. The more you give, the more they will take. At some point it felt like the next thing for me would be to give out pieces of my flesh to my job. (Quite dramatic, I know, but metaphors cut through to how we really feel).
And here is the thing (which I was able to acknowledge only after I left the corporate). Corporate is not human and it is not their job to look out for you. Their job is to maximize profit by increasing revenues and decreasing costs, so squeezing every last drop out of you is a savvy business decision, come think of it.
Your boss, HR or specific people at your job might be more mindful. I work and talk with leaders who genuinely care, want to lead from their true values and create a better environment for everyone. I am honored to support these leaders!
But you may encounter different management styles and frankly your boss is also human and has a lot on their plate. Besides, they may just not know. How often do you openly share with your boss how you feel? Being vulnerable is not our first choice in the corporate environment.
I know it was not for me, until I got up my courage and “came out”. This gave me a carte blanche to think thoughts and try things that I would never envision when I was in a ”normal” corporate rut and believed that pushing through is the right and only way (hint, the precursor for being so brave was getting to the height of burnout, which I do not recommend).
What can you do?
If it is not reasonable to rely on the job to look out for you, then it is really your responsibility to establish and enforce boundaries and create experience at work to your liking. No one will do this for you, but you!
Accepting this may seem hard and unpleasant at first, but it also gives you power back, the power to change things, to think “what do I want to create?” Isn’t this a fresh idea to consider when you think about work?
So what do you want to create?
What is one thing that you would never want to do again?
How would you like to be seen, recognized, acknowledged?
How does a job that is right for you feel?
We will be answering these and other important questions and figuring out how to get there during the 3-months of the Fire Starter Sessions. This group program will kick off in March. Doing this will help you untie your knots, lift weight off your shoulders, and invite what you want more of in your work and life.
If you are ready to start creating the experience you want, send me an email saying “FSS” and I will send you the information on the program, or schedule a call with me to explore if the program is right for you using this link.
